A Coppersmith bird is a tiny green bird that makes a call similar to the sound that is made when the coppersmith works. It is said that this bird’s call indicates the start of the summer season in India, and very much like the saying we hear this bird call loud and clear throughout the day in summer which is also their breeding time.
The painting depicts a nesting pair of coppersmith barbet who were surveying a tree to build their nest, while the background is an abstraction of the bird’s call ‘tung! Tung! Pretty much hammered with paint.
